Temperature dependent fungi

Introduction

Like other organisms, different fungi thrive best at different temperatures and the following terms are usually used depending on which temperature range is optimal for growth.

Mesophiles are organisms, that can grow and reproduce at temperatures around +37°C (approx. +20 to +45°C).

Psychrophiles are organisms that can grow and reproduce at low temperatures (-20°C to +10°C).

Thermophiles are organisms that can grow and reproduce at temperatures above +45°C. Among eukaryotic organisms, some fungi are the only thermophiles, which can live and reproduce at temperatures above +45°C.

Hyperthermophiles are organisms that can grow and reproduce at temperatures above +80°C. There are no hyperthermophilic fungi.
