Extremophilic fungi

Introduction

Extremophilic fungi are fungi that live in conditions that are considered difficult to survive in for carbon-based life forms.

Psychrophiles are organisms that can grow and reproduce at low temperatures (-20°C to +10°C).

Thermophiles are organisms that can grow and reproduce at temperatures above +45°C. Among eukaryotic organisms, some fungi are the only thermophiles, which can live and reproduce at temperatures above +45°C.

Radioresistant organisms can withstand high levels of ionizing radiation such as UV radiation and nuclear radiation.

Xerophiles are organisms that thrive under very dry conditiond (water activity under 0.8).
